Industry Award Winners 2024

The 2024 BusNSW Industry Awards were presented at the BusNSW 2024 Members Conference on 9-10 October.

BusNSW Apprentice Award

Winner: Matthew Geary

2024 Apprentice of the Year M Geary

At this year’s BusNSW Member Conference, Matthew Geary was honoured with the inaugural NSW “Apprentice of the Year” Award, presented by The Hon. Jenny Aitchison, NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and BusNSW President John King. Matthew’s vocational journey exemplifies the value of continuous learning and professional growth. Beginning with an apprenticeship in Automotive Body Repair Technology in 2012, he later pursued a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, graduating in 2024.

Matthew’s passion for the bus industry, commitment to upskilling, and mentorship of other apprentices have made him a key contributor. His forward-thinking approach, especially with the shift to electric vehicles, showcases his dedication to innovation and adaptability in the evolving NSW bus industry.


BusNSW Environmental and Innovative Operator Award

Winner: Kinetic

2024 Environmental Award Winners KineticAt the 2024 BusNSW Member Conference, Kinetic received the prestigious “Environment and Innovation Award,” presented by The Hon. Jenny Aitchison, NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and BusNSW President John King. As one of Australasia’s largest operators of Battery Electric Buses (BEBs), Kinetic has demonstrated exceptional leadership in sustainability and innovation. Represented by Martin Hall, Kinetic was recognised for its Zero-Emission Bus trial, launched in April 2024 in partnership with Transport for NSW, which introduced electric buses on regional school routes. This trial supports NSW’s goal to fully transition its bus fleet to zero emissions by 2047. Kinetic’s efforts extend beyond operational changes, with educational outreach programs fostering environmental awareness in communities. Their broader sustainability goals include achieving net zero emissions by 2035 and advancing waste reduction, energy efficiency, and the circular economy.


BusNSW Achiever Award

Winner: Eliza Baldwin

2024 Achiever Award Winner E BaldwinAt the 2024 BusNSW Member Conference, Eliza Baldwin, Managing Director of Baldwins Buses, received the prestigious “Achiever Award,” presented by The Hon. Jenny Aitchison, NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and BusNSW President John King. A second-generation bus operator from the Riverina, Eliza has made significant strides in leading her family business, blending innovation with tradition. With a Bachelor of Business from Charles Sturt University, she oversees both financial and operational aspects, even stepping in as a relief driver. Eliza’s leadership extends beyond her company to her local community, where she was named 2023 Young Business Manager of the Year. As a participant in BusNSW’s “Next Gen Leaders” program, she is part of the new generation of professionals shaping the future of the bus industry.


BusNSW Safety Award

Winner: CDC NSW

C02 8230At the 2024 BusNSW Member Conference, CDC NSW was awarded the prestigious “Safety Award,” presented by The Hon. Jo Haylen, NSW Minister for Transport, and BusNSW President John King. Recognised for their proactive and comprehensive approach to safety, CDC NSW has set a benchmark in the transport sector. Their initiatives include partnerships with local police, schools, and community organisations to address anti-social behaviour, as well as in-house programs like the ‘Safe & Sound Training Program’ for drivers. They have also implemented innovative safety measures such as an in-bus Duress Alert system, security guards on high-risk routes, and an AI-powered driver fatigue management system. CEO David Mead accepted the award on behalf of CDC NSW, underscoring the company’s commitment to creating a safer environment for drivers, passengers, and the wider community.

 


BusNSW Supplier Award

Winner: Vehicle Dealers International (VDI)

2024 Supplier of the Year VDIAt the 2024 BusNSW Member Conference, Vehicle Dealers International (VDI) was awarded the “Supplier of the Year” Award, presented by The Hon. Jo Haylen, NSW Minister for Transport, and John King, President of BusNSW. Sara Clark, VDI’s National Sales Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company, which has rapidly become a major player in the Australian bus market. VDI’s exponential growth, driven by its commitment to innovation and sustainability, is highlighted by its partnership with Yutong and its role in electric bus trials in regional NSW. The company also supports local manufacturing, evidenced by a new facility and strategic partnerships. VDI’s comprehensive services, including route analysis and maintenance support, have earned praise for ensuring a smooth transition to electric fleets. VDI’s dedication to greener transport and local economic growth has cemented its leadership in the bus industry.


BusNSW Outstanding Contribution to the Industry Award

Winner: John King

2024 Contribution to the Industry Award Winner J KingAt the 2024 BusNSW Member Conference, John King, President of BusNSW, was honoured with the “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” Award, presented by The Hon. Jo Haylen, NSW Minister for Transport, and Matt Threlkeld, BusNSW Executive Director. With a five-decade career, John’s journey began at the grassroots level, eventually leading him to acquire and expand a successful bus business across two states. As President of BusNSW for the past eight years, he has been a tireless advocate for the industry, engaging with government officials, mentoring young talent, and supporting the BusNSW Next Gen Leaders Forum. His impact extends nationally through roles with the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) and the Australian Public Transport Industrial Association (APTIA).
